Sour Sensitivity - What is It?
If you eat foods like lemons, pickles, tomatoes, and pickles, you might notice an aching in your teeth afterwards. This is because the acid in these foods is beginning to weaken the enamel on your teeth, exposing the sensitive dentin underneath.
If you do not know already, the enamel is the hard-outer part of the tooth. It protects the tooth from decay and helps it to hold up under the rigors of chewing. When the enamel is damaged or weakened, the dentin underneath may be exposed and start to cause you discomfort.
What Should You Do? The good news is that your enamel can repair itself. In a process known as “remineralization” the enamel absorbs the materials it needs to strengthen and repair itself. While the amount of time this will take will of course depend on the extent of the damage to your enamel, it is worth taking the steps to help your enamel heal.
One of the most important things you can do is stop damaging the enamel. This may mean cutting back (or eliminating) the foods that are stripping away the enamel. It also means using a good toothpaste that will provide you with fluoride, which your enamel uses to strengthen itself.
