Enamel fluorosis is a common dental problem in which teeth have inherent white or brown mottling or striations. Fluorosis is created by hypo mineralization in the enamel due to increased fluoride consumption during early childhood (the second and third years of life specifically). These spots can be fairly esthetically displeasing to individuals. Most people are not aware that enamel fluorosis is a common oral illness where teeth have different types of discoloration.
What to Do if You Have Fluorosis Stains
If you happen to have fluorosis stains on your teeth, we recommend that you come in and have us take a look. We do have procedures where we can remove some of the stains, depending on the circumstances. Many fluorosis stains are superficially on the surface of your teeth. However, some are deeper and are not realistically able to be corrected easily. The only way to know if we can manage your stains is to see them and talk with you about what we find. There are many options that can come into play. However, one of the most common involves scrubbing the surfaces of your teeth and whitening them using slurries of specially-made compounds meant to help with this ailment. Not everyone who has fluorosis stains require that they be corrected. To some people, they are simply a part of who they are. If you are one of the individuals who would prefer the stains be removed, then contact us and set up a time for us to examine your teeth. We will look at what you have going on and then take the time to explain your treatment options. Once you have listened to the options you have, we can work with you to develop a treatment plan that will get your smile looking as bright and white as you want.
