Sinus Lift

A woman reviewing her x-ray with a dentistAt City Smiles DC we are experts in sinus lift procedures. A sinus lift is a surgical procedure that is done to lift the sinus membrane, to create room for adding bone to the upper jaw. You will need a sinus lift and bone addition procedure if your jawbone has been damaged, and some dental implants need to be anchored on the jawbone.

We will perform a sinus lift to create enough bone height for dental implants in the upper jaw. The dental implants are planted deep into the jaw. If the sinus membrane is too close to your jaw, it will need to be pushed up a bit.

Why Would You Need a Sinus Lift?

Sinus lifts are quite common among people who need dental implants in their upper jaw, especially if it is the pre-molars and molars that are being replaced. Many people have less bone on the upper jaw as compared to the lower jaw, thanks to the skull anatomy. Another major cause of bone loss in the jaw is the periodontal disease. It is a condition that affects and weakens the gums, and it could eat into the jawbone as well.

Depending on the size of sinus lift bone needed, it could be obtained from your body, from a cow, or a cadaver. The idea is to provide just about enough bone height for implant placement. If the graft bone is to be obtained from your body, it is normally taken from your mouth. If a relatively large amount of bone is required, it will be obtained from your hip or tibia.

You need to be carefully examined by our experts before any procedures are conducted on you. Before the sinus lift procedure, your jaw anatomy should be studied carefully to determine how high the sinus should be lifted. In more complex situations, a computed tomography scan might be necessary. The scan will reveal the exact height and width of your current jawbone, as well as the health of your sinus.

The Procedure

The procedure is not complicated and should not take too long. Your gum tissue will be cut, where your teeth had been attached. The jawbone will be left exposed, and a small window will be cut into it. The window will expose the sinus membrane on the other side. The membrane will be carefully pushed back and space left filled with bone graft granules.

The gum tissue is then closed and stitched up. The bone graft has to be allowed to mesh with your jawbone before any implants are placed on it. A large bone graft will take longer to heal. It can take anywhere between four and nine months for the bone graft to heal. You should avoid blowing your nose or sneezing heavily before the bone graft has healed. These actions can easily dislodge the bone graft.
