Types of Dental Implants
At City Smiles DC we are the best in all types of dental implant placements. If you have a missing or damaged tooth, dental implants are often your best bet to restore your smile. Dental implants can be either dentures, crowns or bridges. One of these implants will be recommended depending on the state of your tooth or tooth gap.
Dentures are the most common implants used by people. They are used to replace teeth that have been lost. Dentures can be either complete or partial. Partial dentures are those placed where a few teeth are missing, while complete dentures are placed when all the teeth are missing.
In most instances, dentures are removable. Normal dentures have a pink plastic base that attaches itself to your gums. Some dentures, such as those used to anchor crown-bridges, are permanent though. Such dentures are screwed to your jawbone to ensure they hold on firmly.
Crowns are normally used when your tooth is damaged, but it still has its root structure intact. The tooth might be damaged as a result of tooth decay or impact. The tooth is first cleaned and all the decayed material removed, shaped, and then a crown is permanently cemented into it.
Our dentists will take an impression of your tooth so that a crown can be made for you. The damaged tooth will then be prepared for the crown. Crowns usually restore a natural look in your teeth structure. Crowns are quite effective, and you will hardly feel any change in your mouth once you’ve healed. You can use your crowned teeth just like you would use your normal teeth.
Bridges are normally used when you have a tooth gap of more than one tooth. Bridges are attached to the teeth adjacent to the gap. The bridge implant procedure is quite similar to that of a crown. Our experts will take an impression of your teeth, and a bridge is made for you.
The anchor teeth will be cleaned and shaped while the bridge is being prepared. Each end of the bridge is made like a crown, while the middle part that will cover your tooth gap is just like normal teeth. The bridge is them permanently cemented onto the anchor teeth.
Bridges are also permanent, just like crowns. Although they might feel unnatural for the first few days, you get used to them after a while. You can use the bridge to eat and other normal teeth functions, although you need to avoid using them to bit into hard foods.
If you have dentures, you need to remove them and store them properly when you go to sleep. Dentures should be stored in moist conditions to ensure they remain soft. Crowns and bridges function like normal teeth. You will need to brush them just as you would brush your natural teeth. Proper oral hygiene is essential in all situations.
